In a recent match against Sparta Rotterdam, Julio Pleguezuelo found himself at the centre of rather unique controversy.

As the game entered the 99th minute, both teams were looking to secure a win, Pleguezuelo was involved in a scuffle with Sparta’s assistant coach Jeroen Rijsdijk, after the coach grabbed the Twente defender, preventing him from playing the ball.

A furious Pleguezuelo got up to confront Rijsdijk before the referee quickly intervened, sending off the Sparta coach.

Pleguezuelo’s time at Arsenal

Julio Pleguezuelo joined Arsenal’s academy in 2013 from Barcelona’s famed La Masia.

The young Spanish defender showed promise early on, with his strong technical skills and ability to read the game.

However, despite his potential, Pleguezuelo was never able to break into the first team during his time at the North London club.

While at Arsenal, Pleguezuelo went on several loan spells, including time at RCD Mallorca and Gimnàstic de Tarragona, to gain first-team experience.

The defender ultimately left the Gunners in 2019, signing with FC Twente in the Dutch Eredivisie on a free transfer.
