Speaking to the media at his pre-match press conference, Arteta added that Saliba’s recovery was ‘progressing well’.

Arteta said, “William [Saliba] is still not available. He is progressing well and we are hopeful we are going to have him available in the next few weeks.”

The use of the word ‘hopefully’ there does not instil much confidence.

Despite this latest update on Saliba, we still do not know when we will see him back as he recovers from the injury sustained during our Europa League match on March 16.

Rob Holding is likely to continue playing in Saliba’s absence.

Arteta was also asked for his opinion on Gabriel Martinelli who has been on fire this season.

“He’s playing more games that’s for sure,” Arteta replied.

“He’s got another year of experience, huge understanding with his teammates. The way he approaches those games it’s to be the best.

“I’m not surprised about that. The good thing is there’s still a lot to improve.”
