Granit Xhaka expresses optimism for Anfield success

Arsenal midfielder Granit Xhaka is confident that the team can end their 11-year wait for a Premier League win at Anfield against Liverpool.

Despite Liverpool’s struggles this season, Xhaka warns his teammates not to underestimate their opponents.

“It does not matter how their season is going – they are always a dangerous team and, at Anfield, a very difficult team to play,” said Xhaka.

“But we have confidence enough to win there as well. This is what we will try to do. That’s why we are going there, so let’s see if we can bring the three points back.”

Gunners chase first title since 2004

Currently leading the Premier League table, Arsenal are eight points clear of Manchester City and just nine games away from securing their first title since 2004.

The Gunners’ upcoming match at Anfield will be crucial in maintaining their advantage although Jurgen Klopp’s side will be keen to make a point after being on the receiving end of a 4-1 drubbing at City this weekend.

Reflecting on Arsenal’s last victory at Anfield

Arsenal’s last win at Anfield took place in September 2012 with a 2-0 victory.

Current manager Mikel Arteta played in that game, as you can see above, and now leads the team with renewed hope for a triumphant return.

Emphasising team performance

Xhaka also highlights the importance of focusing on their own performance rather than Manchester City’s results.

“If I am honest, we are looking at ourselves [and not Manchester City]. We have everything in our hands – nine games to go now,” Xhaka said.

“Let’s say five points over City – or eight now we have played one game more. It is most important what happens in the team, not what anybody else does.”

Arsenal’s eight-point lead was briefly cut to five after City’s win against Liverpool, but the Gunners responded with a 4-1 win over Leeds.
