Saturday was a dramatic day for a lot of Arsenal’s loanees, with plenty of highs and lows across their various clubs.
There was a lot at stake on Saturday for clubs entrusted with Arsenal loanees this season, at both ends of their respective tables.
Let’s start with the bad news, and unfortunately, there was quite a lot of it.
Wigan Athletic didn’t select Miguel Azeez or Omar Rekik for their game against Reading, and they conceded a last-minute equaliser in that must-win game to confirm their relegation to League One.
Blackpool will be going down with them, after having their relegation confirmed on Friday in a match Charlie Patino started.
There was further bad news in the Championship as Marquinhos started for Norwich City in a 2-1 defeat to West Bromwich Albion, mathematically confirming that they’ll miss out on the play-offs and won’t be promoted.
In League One, Nathan Butler-Oyedeji featured as a substitute for Accrington Stanley as their 2-1 defeat to Cambridge United effectively relegated them as well.
Though they’re three points behind 20th place with a game left, they’d have to overturn a goal-difference deficit of 16 on the final day, which simply isn’t realistic.
Down in League Two, Hartlepool United had one of the more heartbreaking days, winning 3-1 only for results elsewhere to relegate them anyway. Taylor Foran was on the bench for the match.
But that leads us to the first bit of good news. Hartlepool’s relegation was confirmed by Crawley Town securing safety, with Mazeed Ogungbo on loan at the club. Crawley drew 0-0 with Walsall on Saturday to stay up.
Tyreece John-Jules is currently injured, but he still got to enjoy a great day with Ipswich Town, who secured promotion to the Championship with a 6-0 win over Exeter City.
Up in the Championship, Brooke Norton-Cuffy started as Coventry City secured a key win to stay in the play-off places with one game remaining. A win on the final day guarantees them a play-off spot.
And down in the National League, Tim Akinola featured as a substitute as Chesterfield thrashed Maidstone United 4-0 to make the play-off semi-finals.
Six teams qualify for the play-offs in the National League, but the teams finishing second and third in the league get a bye to the semi-finals, and Chesterfield have now finished third.
So there was drama for the Arsenal loanees all over the English football system on Saturday.
The only players to have a relatively quiet day were Albert Sambi Lokonga, Auston Trusty, and Tom Smith.
Lokonga didn’t feature in Crystal Palace’s 4-3 win over West Ham United. Trusty played 90 minutes of a dead-rubber game for Birmingham City.
And finally, Smith featured in a 1-0 defeat with Colchester United – who already secured League Two safety last week.
