Arsenal are reportedly targeting Eintracht Frankfurt’s Djibril Sow to strengthen their midfield as Mikel Arteta seeks to bolster the squad.

Arsenal targeting Djibril Sow for midfield reinforcement

In an effort to strengthen their midfield, Arsenal have reportedly set their sights on Eintracht Frankfurt’s Djibril Sow, according to Bild via The Mirror.

By my count, Sow is the 364th midfielder to be linked with Arsenal ahead of this summer’s window.

The 26-year-old Swiss midfielder has, like all the others, been identified as a ‘key target’ for Mikel Arteta as he looks to bolster his squad for the new season.

Sow’s impressive Frankfurt run

Djibril Sow has been a standout player for Eintracht Frankfurt, contributing three goals in 38 appearances across all competitions from a defensive (17) or central midfield (21) position.

His contract with the German club runs until the summer of 2024, and Sow has become an essential part of coach Oliver Glasner’s plans but is refusing to sign a new deal.

With a combination of physical prowess, mobility, and the ability to make a difference in midfield, Sow is a player who could adapt well to Arteta’s style of play.

He’s also a huge fan of Granit Xhaka. “Above all, Xhaka is a role model as a personality, as a leader,” Sow said last year. “He brings a presence to the pitch that I haven’t seen that often before.”

Arteta’s plans for a stronger midfield

Arsenal’s need to bolster their midfield arises from the lack of top-tier rotation options for the likes of Thomas Partey and Xhaka.

As the team aims for consistency and depth in their midfield, Arsenal have been linked to many potential targets in recent months.

Sow is just the latest name to emerge as a potential target, with the Gunners reportedly preparing an initial offer of £13 million to test Eintracht Frankfurt’s resolve according to Fichajes, who build on The Mirror’s piece which simply mentions that as a valuation.

While no official statement has been made by anybody regarding the player’s potential transfer, it is claimed that Sow’s skills could complement the current Arsenal lineup.

However, it still remains to be seen if he will be the midfielder Arsenal do indeed bring in.

Sow on the Premier League

In 2021, Sow said, “The Premier League is the most attractive league in my opinion. The best players compete there. I’ve always dreamed of playing in the Premier League.

“But when I was a little boy, I never would have thought that I would play for Eintracht today. So I’m very happy with how my career is going. The Bundesliga is not one of the best leagues for nothing.”
