Former Arsenal striker Chuba Akpom scored his 28th Championship goal of the season on Wednesday, against Hull City. It was his 29th goal in all competitions for Middlesbrough this campaign, a career-best tally for him.

The goal was a confident finish, with Akpom spinning on the ball and firing it into the opposite corner. You can watch it here from 1:41.

As well as helping Middlesbrough to the verge of securing a play-off spot, the goal also broke a Championship record. Akpom became the first Championship player to score in nine home games in a row.

The 27-year-old has been on quite an incredible run, scoring 15 in his last 15 games. It was no surprise to see how pleased he was after the match.

“Yeah, I’m enjoying it,” Akpom said. “I’m just playing with a smile on my face. I can’t complain, I’m loving it at the moment!

“I think [Michael Carrick] is the manager I’ve been dreaming for my whole career.

“He’s a pleasure to work with, and I go out there and give 110%. I want to fight for the manager, you know? He’s showed so much trust and confidence in me, and I really appreciate it, so I just had to dedicate that [goal] to the gaffer today.”

Of course, Akpom will want to end his incredible season with promotion to the Premier League.

It looks like automatic promotion is off the table, with second-place Sheffield United eight points ahead with three games left, but a play-off spot is all but confirmed already.

Sitting just one point behind third-place Luton Town, Middlesbrough will hope they can climb another position in the final three matches and get the easier play-off semi-final tie.

That will largely hinge on the next game, as Luton host Middlesbrough on Monday, 24th April at 20:00 BST.
