Arsenal u21 forwards Kido Taylor-Hart and Billy Vigar went on a youth loan to the Derby County u21s in January, as they looked to build their minutes after a quiet campaign with the Gunners.

Both players started for the u21s in the Derbyshire Senior Challenge Cup quarter-finals against non-league senior side Alfreton Town FC on Wednesday, and it was Taylor-Hart who ended up stealing the headlines in a dramatic contest.

The Arsenal loanee scored a fantastic goal from outside the box to give Derby a 1-0 lead midway through the first half, but there were many twists and turns to come.

Derby doubled their advantage in the 26th minute through Sonny Blulo-Everton, before Alfreton bounced back in some style.

Peter Dearle pulled a goal back before half-time, then two goals from Tom Denton, one from Ahmed Salam, and another from Baily Hobson gave the hosts a 5-2 lead in the second half.

With three minutes to go, Alfreton seemed to have the game wrapped up, then Taylor-Hart scored his second of the night from the right-hand side to make it 5-3.

Alfreton’s Twitter admin called the goal a “consolation”, but it turned out to be anything but.

Two minutes later, Taylor-Hart scored another excellent goal from the edge of the box for 5-4, completing his hat-trick.

Then, in the fourth minute of injury time, Darren Robinson headed home for 5-5.

The quarter-final tie went to penalties, with Taylor-Hart stepping up and scoring the fourth spot-kick as Derby won 5-3 in the shootout.

Derby will now face Belper Town FC in the semi-final, and Taylor-Hart should be nailed on to keep his place in the side after his quarter-final performance.
