Arsenal goalkeeper Karl Hein has struggled for minutes recently, in part due to an injury setback, but also because he’s somewhat in limbo between the academy and senior football at the moment.

Hein has travelled with the Arsenal senior squad to games on a number of occasions this season, but he last officially made the bench on January 9th.

Even with the academy teams, he hasn’t featured much. He’s played one time for the u21s in 2023 so far.

All the same, Estonia called the 20-year-old up for the current international break and gave him a start in their friendly against Hungary this week.

Though Estonia ended up losing the match 1-0, Hein did well on an individual level. He made seven saves throughout the match, most notably from a penalty in the 71st minute.

Before the kick was taken, Dominik Szoboszlai and Roland Sallai played Rock Paper Scissors to determine the taker. Sallai won, stepped up to the spot, and saw his attempt saved by Hein.

Hein then pounced on the rebound as well, to keep his team in the game.

Five minutes later, both Szoboszlai and Sallai were taken off.

Hein has had a number of impressive moments with his country in his young career.

He’s kept a clean sheet against Wales in a competitive fixture, he’s won the Baltic Cup, and the last time he conceded more than one goal in an international was in 2021.

Estonia aren’t the highest-ranking national team in the world, sitting 109th in FIFA’s estimation. But they seem to have a young star in goal.
