Further reports have now confirmed that Arsenal have activated their two-year option to extend Marcelo Flores’ contract at the club.

The Evening Standard report that Arsenal have activated their two-year option in Marcelo Flores’ contract, extending the deal to 2025. The winger’s deal was previously set to expire this summer.

This follows a similar recent report from Fernando Cevallos, who also claimed Flores had extended his contract to 2025.

When Flores signed his first professional deal in 2020, his father told the media it was a five-year deal.

But FIFA regulations prevent 17-year-olds from signing for more than three years with their first professional contract, so in actuality Flores’ deal was a three-year contract with an extension option.

Marcelo Flores: Staying in Spain for another year?

Cevallos went on to report that Flores’ intention is to stay in Spain for another year after his current loan spell ends, with a couple of clubs interested in him.

Evaluating Flores’ future: Bench time vs regular starts

That doesn’t necessarily mean Flores will stay at Real Oviedo, and right now, another year with Oviedo seems unlikely.

The 19-year-old has made 15 appearances for the club this season, but he’s struggled for consistent minutes, only starting once in 2023 so far.

Flores remains part of the matchday squad for every game, but another year on the bench wouldn’t be preferable to a regular starting role in 2023/24. A summer change of scenery seems likely.
