Ilkay Gundogan is reportedly seeking a move away from Manchester City as he is yet to agree on a new contract with the club. The German international has emerged as a target for both Arsenal and Barcelona, but his wage demands are proving to be a sticking point.

TLDR;

  • Arsenal’s pursuit of Gundogan may be hindered by the midfielder’s desire to move to Barcelona.
  • However, with the Blaugrana reportedly unwilling to meet his wage demands, Arsenal may have a chance of signing the German international.
  • With his contract expiring, it remains to be seen whether Gundogan will remain at Manchester City or seek a new challenge elsewhere.

Arsenal’s interest in Gundogan

Gundogan has been linked with a move to Arsenal as Mikel Arteta looks to strengthen his midfield options. Arteta is keen to add quality to his squad, particularly in that area although, at 32, Gundogan certainly falls outside of the age profile of players Arsenal are looking to sign.

However, with an expiring contract this summer he would be available for free.

Arteta worked closely with Gundogan during his time with City. That previous working relationship with the German is likely a factor in Arsenal’s reported interest in signing the midfielder.

Unfortunately, it seems that Gundogan is more interested in a move to Barcelona.

The Catalan giants are said to have been monitoring the midfielder’s situation and are keen to add him to their squad.

Barcelona’s wage concerns

Despite their interest, Barcelona are reportedly unwilling to pay the wages demanded by Gundogan, who currently earns the same £140,000-per-week with City that he agreed to when he signed in 2016.

The Blaugrana are said to be exploring the possibility of signing him, but only if he agrees to lower his wage demands.

That news will come as a boost to Arsenal, who significantly increased the wages of both Oleksandr Zinchenko and Gabriel Jesus when they signed last summer (although their starting salaries were much lower).

Still, it remains to be seen whether the Gunners can compete with Barcelona for Gundogan’s signature. Winning the Premier League this season would certainly help.

Gundogan’s importance to Manchester City

Gundogan has, like always, been a key player for Manchester City this season, scoring four and assisting four in all competitions.

Pep Guardiola is said to be keen to keep the German at the club, but it remains to be seen whether a new contract can be agreed.
