Arsenal were first linked with Marco Asensio in 2017 when they were meant to be ‘fighting’ with Liverpool over his signing Real Madrid for £40m.

At that point, the then 21-year-old midfielder was contracted until 2022 with Real Madrid and had scored three goals in 15 La Liga appearances that season.

Real Madrid president at the time, Florentino Perez, was said to value Asensio at £40m and was reluctant to let him go as he was seen as a ‘hot prospect’.

Since then, Asensio has racked up a total of 266 appearances, scoring 55 goals and assisting 29.
