After dropping out of the Blackpool starting lineup for a couple of games, Charlie Patino returned to the side for their match away to Swansea City on Wednesday night.

The on-loan Arsenal midfielder had made a positive impression in his previous substitute appearance, playing 67 minutes after a first-half injury to one of the starters.

“He was excellent,” Blackpool boss Mick McCarthy said after that game. “I thought he was fresh and bright when he went on. I was delighted with him.”

Yet after an encouraging display from the bench, Patino’s fortunes were reversed on Wednesday.

Back in the starting lineup against Swansea, Patino watched his team fall 1-0 down, before picking up a yellow card as the game approached half-time.

Less than 15 minutes into the second half, Patino went in for a loose ball, getting there just after the opponent in a fairly hefty challenge.

It was enough for the referee to pull out a second yellow, sending the 19-year-old off. You can see the incident here from 0:40.

Despite a spirited attempt to turn the game with 10 men, Blackpool ended up losing 2-1. They’ll now have to do without Patino for their next match against Stoke City.

For Patino, it’s another moment to learn from, which is what these loans are for. As for Blackpool, they’re now in a worrying position at the bottom of the table, four points away from escaping the relegation zone.
