Unai Emery has been trying to get Matteo Guendouzi out of Marseille but while the French club are open to selling the former Arsenal midfielder, it will not happen in this window.

Fabrizio Romano reports that Marseille will not sell either Matteo Guendouzi or Jonathan Clauss before the January transfer window closes.

Despite numerous reports to the contrary, Marseille apparently have no intention of letting Guendouzi go and no talks are taking place with Aston Villa.

Although Aston Villa expressed interest in Guendouzi and were rumoured to offer up to €40m, Marseille decided against selling this January, but may consider a summer move.

Former Arsenal head coach, Emery, is known to be a big fan of Guendouzi and has praised his skills and potential as a young player.

He gave Guendouzi significant playing time during his time at Arsenal, citing his energy and intensity on the field.

Despite Guendouzi’s positive experiences with Marseille, a change of manager, from Sampaoli to Tudor, has caused tension and resulted in the board telling Guendouzi he could leave if he wasn’t happy after he complained about Tudor’s tactics during a summer friendly.

Arsenal have a sell-on clause in the deal they made with Marseille which would have seen them claw back enough to cover Jorginho’s transfer had Guendouzi moved to Aston Villa for the reported €40m.

As it stands, it looks like Villa will return in the summer for Guendouzi with Jonathan Johnson telling Sky Sports, “I think things are accelerating in the sense that he could end up being a Villa player at least by the summer.

“Obviously, Marseille have already started to put things in place where they are covered now if Guendouzi were to leave with the arrival of Ounahi from Angers.

“But I understand that Villa are not close to making an official offer for Guendouzi and convincing Marseille to let him discuss a transfer”.
