Borussia Dortmund are pushing to finalise a deal for Ivan Fresneda but Arsenal aren’t out of the race just yet with nothing decided.

Earlier this week, a report from The Athletic suggested the race to sign Ivan Fresneda from Real Valladolid was down to Arsenal and Borussia Dortmund, with the plan for the right-back to sign and then return to Valladolid on loan until the summer.

Gianluca Di Marzio then claimed that Arsenal were leading the race for the player, speaking on Tuesday.

But Dortmund now seem to be pushing to close a deal. Matteo Moretto reports that the German club are close to reaching an agreement, but it’s not a done deal just yet.

Moretto adds that Fresneda’s agents are in England for another transfer, but they’re also using the opportunity to speak with English clubs about Fresneda.

Fabrizio Romano writes that Fresneda hasn’t made a decision on his future just yet, with Dortmund pushing to get it done. Arsenal now have to decide how to proceed in the next day or two.

A number of other clubs had been chasing Fresneda, including Newcastle United. At this point, it’s seemingly down to just Arsenal and Dortmund, though Romano adds that there is another German club interested.

Both Arsenal and Dortmund have offered the player similar wages, but there are some differences between the two proposals in a sporting sense.

Arsenal have the advantage of near-guaranteed Champions League football next season, with Dortmund sitting seventh in the Bundesliga compared to the Gunners’ table-topping campaign.

Both clubs regularly field very young sides, with each of them naming a lineup with an average age below 25 at the weekend.

Perhaps it could come down to which league the right-back prefers to play in.

In the short term, it looks like Fresneda would be returning to Valladolid either way, so the current campaign isn’t a particularly strong consideration.
