Alan Nixon reports that Miguel Azeez is set to join Wigan Athletic on loan from Arsenal for the rest of the season.

There are multiple Arsenal connections for Azeez at Wigan, with the former Gunner and Invincible Kolo Toure managing the club, and Kevin Betsy working as a first-team coach.

Betsy coached Azeez during the midfielder’s time with the Arsenal youth system, so the two know each other well.

Azeez even captained the u21s (then u23s) under Betsy on a number of occasions. If Wigan are pursuing a move to sign him, you’d imagine the former Arsenal academy coach had a part to play in it.

UD Ibiza confirmed last Wednesday that Azeez was no longer their player, having reached an agreement with Arsenal to cut his loan move short.

Azeez made eight starts and 11 appearances in Ibiza’s 19 games during his spell at the club, which isn’t a terrible record. But he’d struggled for games more recently.

Part of the problem was that Ibiza had changed managers a couple of times during Azeez’s spell.

He played often under Javier Baraja, then barely at all under interim boss Juan Anquela, and after a couple of starts under Lucas Alcaraz, he lost his place again.

It looks as though Azeez is now set for a loan to the Championship, where he’ll hope to feature more consistently. Sitting at rock bottom of the table, Wigan could use the help.
