Arsenal’s top target for the January transfer window is Mykhaylo Mudryk, with David Ornstein reporting that sources believe the deal has a good chance.
David Ornstein reports for The Athletic that Arsenal’s priority target in January is Shakhtar Donetsk winger Mykhaylo Mudryk. Sources report that there’s a good chance it will happen, though nothing is agreed.
Ornstein writes that Arsenal are in touch with both Shakhtar and Mudryk’s camp, and the player is keen on a move to the Premier League and specifically a move to Arsenal.
Though Brentford had a €25m deal in place over the summer, Mudryk’s valuation has certainly risen since then.
Some reports have suggested Shakhtar want as much as €100m, but interested parties believe a lower fee would be deemed acceptable.
Mudryk previously lodged public complaints over talk of a €100m valuation, feeling it would scupper his transfer.
Arsenal’s success in signing the winger will reportedly come down to price, and the club have other options if it doesn’t work out.
The Athletic previously reported that Arsenal had a wide forward capable of regularly contributing to goals and a midfielder to anchor the team on their shortlist for signings in the January window.
However, at the time it wasn’t clear how Gabriel Jesus’ injury might affect their plans.
It seems the Gunners still intend to push for a wide forward, specifically Mudryk, as a priority signing.
Perhaps the club are reasoning that bringing in another wide forward frees Gabriel Martinelli to act as a backup centre-forward, addressing two positions in one go.
Mudryk’s agent Oleksiy Alyokhin has suggested that the January window could be the right time for the winger to leave Shakhtar.
“It can be seen with the naked eye that he outgrew the championship of Ukraine a long time ago and is ready to perform at a more serious level,” Alyokhin said. “He needs to progress.
“And in my opinion, now is the best time for it. I think everyone will benefit from this. Shakhtar, the national team of Ukraine, and the player himself.”
Mudryk has scored 10 goals and assisted eight in 18 appearances for Shakhtar Donetsk this season, including five goals and assists in his six Champions League appearances.
The 21-year-old appears to be a top attacking talent, and he would be an exciting addition to Arsenal’s squad.
