As Arsenal fell to their first defeat of the season, there was concern for Beth Mead who went down towards the end of injury time and had to be replaced.

Arsenal have now confirmed that the news is not good.

“We can confirm that Beth Mead suffered a ruptured anterior cruciate ligament in our match against Manchester United at Emirates Stadium on Saturday,” Arsenal wrote.

“Unfortunately, this means that Beth is set for an extended period on the sidelines. She will see a surgeon in the coming days, after which further details on timescales will be established.”

The usual recovery time for an ACL injury is eight-to-nine months which means that Mead will almost certainly miss the World Cup that takes place in Australia and New Zealand and starts on 20 July.

It’s an awful end to what has been an amazing year for Mead and we wish her all the best with her recovery.
