Southampton faced Sheffield Wednesday in midweek, with one final chance to impress before their new manager Nathan Jones joined the club on Thursday morning.

Arsenal loanee Ainsley Maitland-Niles began the cup clash on the bench, but he came on for the final 30 minutes as a substitute, and he ended up playing a role in the subsequent penalty shootout.

With the scores tied at 1-1 after 90 minutes, both teams began taking their spot-kicks, and Maitland-Niles stepped up as Southampton’s fourth taker with his team 4-3 down.

As usual, the 25-year-old was calmness personified in the shootout. After a very slow run-up of at least 15 steps, he sent the goalkeeper the wrong way and passed the ball into the corner.

Arsenal fans will already be well aware of this particular aspect of the England international’s game, as he’s done it plenty of times in the past for the Gunners.

Southampton won the shootout 6-5, with Theo Walcott scoring the eventual winner. Maitland-Niles will hope his performances so far convince new boss Jones to make him one of his starters in the coming months.
