The Swiss national team announced their squad for the World Cup on Wednesday morning, with Arsenal midfielder Granit Xhaka making the cut.

This is obviously no surprise, given Xhaka is the captain of his country, but it’s nice to have official confirmation.

Xhaka joins Takehiro Tomiyasu of Japan and Gabriel Martinelli and Gabriel Jesus of Brazil in the early World Cup call-ups, with the potential for more Arsenal players to follow on Wednesday.

Both France and the United States are set to announce their World Cup squads today, so William Saliba and Matt Turner are likely to join the list, and Arsenal loanee Auston Trusty will be watching on nervously as well.

After that, England, Portugal, and Belgium are all expected to announce their squads on Thursday.

Aaron Ramsdale, Ben White, and Bukayo Saka are all hopefuls for England, Nuno Tavares, Fabio Vieira, and Cedric Soares were all in the Portuguese preliminary squad of 55 – though they’re all long shots for the World Cup.

Albert Sambi Lokonga is very unlikely to make the Belgium squad after his recent public comments about his issues with manager Roberto Martinez, but stranger things have happened.

In some other Arsenal-related call-ups, Takuma Asano is in the Japan squad, Joel Campbell is in the Costa Rica squad, and Mat Ryan is in the Australia squad. The trio of former Gunners will all be attending the tournament later this month.
