Graham Potter has praised the Arsenal model and their decision to stand by Mikel Arteta, insisting it’s how the Gunners got to the top.

For a couple of decades now, Arsenal and Chelsea have had very different approaches to their managerial situations.

The Gunners have had Arsene Wenger, Unai Emery, Freddie Ljungberg (on an interim basis), and Mikel Arteta in the last 20 years.

Meanwhile, Chelsea have gone through Claudio Ranieri, Jose Mourinho (twice), Avram Grant, Luiz Felipe Scolari, Guus Hiddink (twice), Carlo Ancelotti, Andre Villas-Boas, Roberto Di Matteo, Rafael Benitez, Steve Holland (caretaker), Antonio Conte, Maurizio Sarri, Frank Lampard, Thomas Tuchel, and now Graham Potter.

The difference in ownership philosophies has been a point of contention between supporters, but current Chelsea boss Potter has praised the Gunners for showing loyalty to their managers and giving them time to implement their ideas.

“Arsenal are top on merit,” Potter said. “They have had three years of working with Mikel, building and building. We are at the start of quite an exciting project with lots of things that have happened behind the scenes, lots of change, and lots of instability.

“What I like is that they identified Mikel and supported him through difficult times.

“There have been times when he has been under pressure, certainly from the outside.

“Take the rivalry of Arsenal and Chelsea away and that is quite a good thing from a coach’s perspective to see a club support and back him and come through. They are getting the rewards now.”

Potter will hope for the same sort of time to get things operating how he’d like them at Chelsea over the coming years, but it remains to be seen whether Todd Boehly will have patience with his managers.

The American businessman certainly didn’t give Thomas Tuchel much of a chance to impress him, but then Tuchel was a manager selected by the former regime.

Perhaps Boehly will be more understanding with a manager he helped to select. At this point, it’s all guesswork.
