In a vital game against Wales on Tuesday, England are looking to progress to the knockout stages of the World Cup and win their group.

After drawing against the USA in their previous match, England are still yet to guarantee progression, though it would take a four-goal defeat to Wales to fail to make the last-16.

The top spot is a tougher ask, as Iran could still beat the USA and get six points, which would leave England needing to win to go back above them.

Gareth Southgate’s squad took part in their final pre-game training session on Monday, and Arsenal’s Ben White was absent from the session.

David Ornstein and James Olley report that the defender is ill, and he’s the only England player missing from training, meaning Bukayo Saka and Aaron Ramsdale are both involved.

It’s bad timing for White, who probably had his best shot at minutes in this game.

From now on, assuming they don’t lose 4-0 on Tuesday, England will be playing in all-or-nothing knockout matches, and Southgate is unlikely to switch things up.

It’s not impossible that circumstances might conspire to give White a chance later in the tournament, with injuries and suspensions always on the cards. But it’s certainly harder to work your way into a lineup in the latter stages.

From an Arsenal point of view, at least the right-back isn’t risking injury at the moment. He has plenty of time to recover from this illness, with still almost a month to go until competitive club football returns.
