England did not enjoy a good night in their second World Cup group game against the USA, coming away with only a point after a boring match which saw few chances created by either side.
On Friday night, the USA claimed their first cleansheet against a European nation in 18 matches and 72 years of trying.
Their last one was in a 1-0 win over the same opponents in 1950.
If you look at player ratings from the match that are based solely on stats and contributions to the game, Bukayo Saka got a 6.4.
It was far from his best evening, but he was not alone.
UK journalists, especially ones who write for the likes of the Mail, don’t tend to give out super-low ratings to England players unless they’ve had a really atrocious night (unlike, say L’Equipe, who are brutal regardless), so it was something of a surprise to see fours handed out.
The Mail gave out two fours from England’s performance against the USA – one to Bukayo Saka and the other to Raheem Sterling.
They also gave Gareth Southgate a four.
The player they rated the highest from England was Harry Maguire with a six.
Mason Mount was named official Man of the Match, but he only gets a 4.5 here.
Out of curiosity, I had a look at the ratings L’Equipe delivered for the same game and they weren’t too far off what the Mail came up with.
As expected, however, they gave out a lot more fours, but they also had Maguire as the best English player.
The USA midfield all rated higher with sevens.
Next up for England is a game against Wales who were even worse in their second group game.
