With the EFL Trophy group stage wrapping up recently, the EFL have announced their nominees for the player of the tournament so far.

Up for the Player of the Round award is Arsenal’s Nathan Butler-Oyedeji, joined by Jacob Chapman (Salford City), Dennis Politic (Port Vale), and Kieran Sadlier (Bolton Wanderers).

You can vote for 19-year-old winger Butler-Oyedeji here:

Butler-Oyedeji scored three goals and assisted one in the group stage, more than any of his rivals for the award – though admittedly Chapman should be excluded from that comparison, as he’s a goalkeeper!

The Arsenal youngster had a tough job on his hands in the group stage, as he’s naturally a winger but he had to step into a centre-forward role in the absence of Khayon Edwards and Billy Vigar through injury.

Yet he stepped up to the task and almost secured progression to the knockout stages single-handedly, playing a part in four of Arsenal’s five goals.

Butler-Oyedeji scored a brace in the group opener against Cambridge United, then provided another goal and assist to win their final game against Northampton Town, with the group on the line.

His finish for Arsenal’s third goal against Northampton was particularly impressive, curling into the top corner with a one-touch shot from the edge of the area. You can watch the goal here from 1:40.

We may be biased, but Butler-Oyedeji really did put in performances worthy of the individual award. Make sure to vote before time runs out!
