Jack Wilshere says that Aaron Ramsdale ‘went through hell’ when he first signed for Arsenal due to the amount of people doubting his ability.

Aaron Ramsdale took no time at all to make many Arsenal fans eat their words as he dislodged Bernd Leno from the first team after just three games of last season.

The keeper had arrived for the costly of £24m + £6m in add-ons and was not immediately welcomed by large sections of the fanbase, who only saw the relegations on the keeper’s CV.

Now, however, you would be hard pushed to find anyone who doesn’t recognise what an immense signing Ramsdale was for Arsenal, nor his importance to the team.

“In the Arsenal team, he’s so important to them because he starts the attack, he creates everything,” Wilshere told talkSPORT.

“But I’m just so happy for him from where he’s gone, because he went through hell when he first signed for Arsenal – everyone was doubting him.

“The two years before that he had two relegations, that builds something inside of you, that hunger and fight in you that you can’t just give to someone and he’s got that.

“And he’s a great lad as well, so whether he plays – I think he should play for England – whether he plays or not, it will be great to have him around the group.”

Ramsdale’s form has seen him rewarded with a World Cup call-up where he will, rather laughably, go to Qatar as England’s number two behind Jordan Pickford.

Since joining Arsenal in August 2021, Ramsdale has conceded 54 goals in 52 games and kept 21 cleansheets.
