The Premier League confirmed their Team of the Season so far on Wednesday, as selected by Alan Shearer.

Perhaps unsurprisingly, there was a heavy Newcastle United contingent in the side, with former Magpie Shearer selecting five players from Eddie Howe’s side, but a couple of Arsenal men made it in too.

William Saliba featured in the defence, with Granit Xhaka in midfield, and Shearer also chose Mikel Arteta as his Manager of the Season so far. With Arsenal top of the table, that should be no real surprise.

Saliba and Xhaka are both deserving inclusions, with Saliba leading the joint-best defence in the league by goals conceded, and Xhaka surprising many with his performances in a new midfield role.

This is the second Premier League Team of the Season so far to feature a couple of Arsenal players, with the WhoScored side also including two.

Gabriel Jesus and Martin Odegaard made the WhoScored team based on their average match ratings with the stat website.

Both Saka and Martinelli were extremely close to making that side as well, both receiving average ratings of 7.29 to leave them in 14th and 15th in the overall league rankings.

Yet none of those four players were the two selected by Shearer, emphasising the quantity of top-performing players with Arsenal this season.

You could make a reasonable argument for any one of Arsenal’s starting lineup featuring in a Team of the Season so far, with the possible exception of the oft-injured Oleksandr Zinchenko.
