Arsenal were one of the clubs to send scouts to watch Ajax face PSV on Sunday, reportedly with a focus on Cody Gakpo.
90min report that Arsenal were one of a number of Premier League clubs to send scouts to watch the top-of-the-table Eredivisie clash between Ajax and PSV on Sunday.
The report suggests Arsenal “were focusing their attention on [Cody] Gakpo“, ahead of the January transfer window.
Gakpo has 30 goals and assists in 23 games for PSV this season, with the vast majority (24) coming in domestic competition. However, he’s also been impressing in the Europa League, with five goal contributions in five matches.
Arsenal got a first-hand look at Gakpo in the group stage, as he started home and away against the Gunners.
The winger didn’t quite hit the heights of the rest of his season against Mikel Arteta’s side, but he did provide an assist and score multiple offside goals in PSV’s home game.
If Arsenal’s defensive line hadn’t played the offside line as well as they did on the day, it could easily have been a rout.
As for the actual game that the Arsenal scouts were supposedly in attendance for on Sunday, Gakpo provided an assist for Luuk de Jong as PSV ran out 2-1 winners.
As it stands, PSV are top of the Eredivisie, but they’re only two points ahead of Ajax and three points ahead of Feyenoord having played a game more. Their title race is certainly hotting up.
