Gabriel Jesus admits he was very emotional after his recent World Cup call-up, as it brought back memories of his first call-up.

Arsenal’s Gabriel Jesus will travel with Brazil to the World Cup in Qatar this month, having received a call-up to the squad last week.

Reflecting on the moment he discovered he was going to be involved with Brazil at the tournament, Jesus admitted he was emotional and reflected on the memory of his first inclusion in the senior national team.

“I was at home,” Jesus began. “I’m alone, you know, my whole family is in Brazil.

“So I was alone in my bed just in front of the TV, watching. And then when I heard my name I was like ‘wow’.

“I remembered the first time I have a call [up] – not for the last World Cup but for the first time I went to the national team – and then [I] was so emotional.

“Then I was like crying and just emotional, you know? I couldn’t move, as well. And then I start to call my mum, my baby, everyone, because this is just amazing for us, just amazing.”

Gabriel Martinelli also admitted he cried after learning of his call-up, in what was evidently an emotional moment for the both of them.

Of course, in Martinelli’s case, this will be his first opportunity to represent Brazil’s senior side at a major tournament. The closest he’s come in the past was in winning the Olympic Gold medal with the Brazil u23s, including a goal in the semi-final shootout.

For Jesus, he’s been here before, travelling to the World Cup in 2018. But this time he’ll be looking to help Brazil to lift the trophy.
