Arsenal and FC Zurich have both been fined by UEFA for incidents during their Europa League match last month.

In UEFA’s latest round of disciplinary decisions, both Arsenal and FC Zurich have been handed fines.

Simon Collings reports that Zurich have come off the worse of the two, receiving a €14,000 fine for the blocking of public passageways and a €9,250 fine for the lighting of fireworks.

But Arsenal have also received a €5,000 fine for a fan issue related to an invasion of the field of play during the match.

The pitch invasion wasn’t covered by TV broadcasters, so it’s difficult to pinpoint the moment the fine relates to. Evidently, an Arsenal supporter attempted to get onto the pitch at some stage.

A €5,000 fine isn’t anything particularly substantial for a club like Arsenal, but it’s a significant amount of money for one or two fans acting out.

You can understand why clubs are keen to crack down on pitch invasions if they’re getting fined the price of multiple season tickets every time it happens.

The Emirates Stadium now has a specific announcement about the consequences of pitch invasions before every game, including lengthy footballing bans. So hopefully that ensures the reverse fixture doesn’t raise any similar issues.
