Reiss Nelson was brought on after just 27 minutes of Arsenal’s game against Nottingham Forest at the Emirates when Bukayo Saka’s legs could take no more kickings.

With Arsenal 1-0 up at the break, things sparked to life in the second half, thanks largely to two goals scored by Reiss Nelson, taking his Arsenal career tally to three.

“It was amazing you know, we had a bit of a slow start after the goal but everyone got into the game and it was great to play in,” Nelson told the BBC after the game.

“Couldn’t have got gone much better than that for me after coming on. Delighted with the goals and the assist. I have been training for my chance and I got it and tried my best to take it.”

On Bukayo Saka’s injury he said, “Of course, it is a huge shame for Arsenal and the nation and we will go and check now and see how he is is. He’s a great boy and it’s great to have him in the team.

“We are just trying to do well for the gaffer and the team. We’re top now and it’s nice, hopefully we can go all the way.”

Speaking a few weeks ago, Mikel Arteta seemed to hint that a new deal is on the way for Nelson, who is out of contract in the summer.

“Yeah, 100 per cent,” Arteta replied when asked by Standard Sport if Nelson could be offered a new contract.

“That is why he is here, because we want to have that opportunity with him. He was willing to take that opportunity and again it’s down to him to show it now on the pitch.

“Out there [in training] he is showing it every day, how he is working, a lot of things that he has changed and improved in many things that, in our opinion, could have been better. Now he is on the right track, now he needs to perform.

“After the spell that he had last year on loan, we wanted him back to see if there are any changes, and there’s a prospect that we can really take to the next level.

“We think the potential is there and we think we’ve seen something in Reiss that is special.”

Reiss has been at Arsenal for 13 years, signing for the club when he was just nine-years-old. He’s been around so long, it’s easy to forget that he is still only 22.

Nelson spend last season on loan with Feyenoord where he scored four and assisted seven in 32 games.
