Aaron Ramsdale believes Arsenal are too good to be blaming the pitch for defeats like Thursday night’s, and admits he made a mistake.

It’s fair to say a few things went against Arsenal in their match against PSV Eindhoven on Thursday, but a lot of those issues were of their own making.

From poor Arsenal finishing to Aaron Ramsdale’s missed punch gifting PSV a goal, the Gunners could hardly point the finger elsewhere.

Whilst it’s also true that the pitch was equal parts slippery and bobbly, and the referee made a couple of questionable decisions, Ramsdale refused to make excuses. The goalkeeper thinks Arsenal just didn’t compete well enough with their opponents.

“There were a number of things,” Ramsdale said. “But we are a good enough team not to be blaming things, obviously the pitch, etc.

“There is no point talking about that. We just didn’t really compete too well off the ball. Credit to them as well obviously, they were good with how they set up.

“But it doesn’t help when you come away from home, [the] goalkeeper makes a mistake, 2-0, uphill battle and it is one we have got to get back from.”

Arsenal will certainly have no excuses in the final game of the group stage, playing on their own pitch against the bottom team in the group who only have three points from five games.

If they can’t pull off a win in that match to top the group, they probably don’t deserve that top spot.
