Matt Turner joked that Granit Xhaka’s right leg is usually just for standing, after the midfielder scored a nice half-volley with his weak foot on Thursday.

Arsenal won 1-0 against PSV Eindhoven on Thursday, but despite Gabriel Jesus, Eddie Nketiah, Bukayo Saka, and Gabriel Martinelli all featuring in the match, the goal came from a much less likely source. Granit Xhaka was the scorer, turning the ball home in the 71st minute.

Xhaka has been more active in the final third this season, scoring a couple of goals even before his effort on Thursday. What made this goal unique was that it came from his right foot.

Of Xhaka’s 17 goals for Arsenal, this was the first on his right. Gunners goalkeeper Matt Turner said afterwards that the 30-year-old scoring with his right is a rarity even in training.

“Yeah, I’ve never seen that before,” Turner admitted. “Not even in training, you can tell him I said that!”

The interviewer then informed Turner that Xhaka’s last right-footed goal at club level was in 2015, to which Turner responded: “Oh my goodness, yeah. That thing’s just for standing, usually!”

Xhaka did score one particularly nice goal for Switzerland with his right foot in 2019, but at club level you have to go all the way back to one he scored for Borussia Monchengladbach in the knockout rounds of the 2014/15 Europa League campaign against Sevilla.

Fortunately, Xhaka was able to come up with the goods when it mattered on Thursday night with a controlled half-volley to earn Arsenal a vital win.

Mikel Arteta’s side now only need three points from their final two games to top the group, or one point if they get it against PSV next week.
