Gabriel Martinelli says he wants to stay at Arsenal and confirms that talks are ongoing over a new contract with the Gunners.
Gabriel Martinelli was one of the stars of the show as Arsenal defeated Liverpool on Sunday, scoring and assisting in the first half of the 3-2 win. The Brazilian picked up the Man of the Match award after the game.
There’s been some speculation around Martinelli’s contract situation lately, but he insisted in his post-game interview that he wants to stay and he’s in talks with the club.
“Of course, I want to stay,” Martinelli said. “We are talking. Let’s see what is going to happen.
“But I want to stay, of course. I think it’s my best season here at Arsenal. I’m so happy for this moment.”
As it stands, Martinelli’s deal will expire in 2024. But Goal have confirmed previous reports from The Times and the Evening Standard that the Brazilian’s contract has a two-year option to extend to 2026.
That obviously puts Arsenal in a very strong position. If they want to hold onto Martinelli for the next four years, they can, regardless of the ongoing negotiations.
On the other hand, if Martinelli wants to stay and Arsenal have the opportunity to extend further, it’s hard to see why they wouldn’t look to do so. This seems like the perfect time to sit down and ensure both sides get what they want.
Goal add that Arsenal are aware the forward deserves to be rewarded with fresh terms. It’s unlikely any Gunners fan would disagree.
