GHANAsoccernet.com report that the Ghana FA have ended their pursuit of Eddie Nketiah for the 2022 World Cup in Qatar. After several attempts to convince the player to switch nationality, they decided to move forward without him.

Nketiah is reportedly still hesitant to commit his international future, and he hasn’t been convinced by various other players making that commitment.

Mohammed Salisu, Inaki Williams, Ransford-Yeboah Königsdörffer, Stephan Ambrosius, and Tariq Lamptey have all joined up with Ghana ahead of November’s tournament, but Nketiah remains evasive.

Reports in August suggested England were also in talks with Nketiah, so perhaps that’s part of the reason for his hesitation. If he still believes he might have a future with Gareth Southgate’s side, he may be keen to hold onto that possibility.

After all, Nketiah already has a history with England, having set the record for the most goals for the England u21s in history. He was also born and raised in the country, despite his familial ties to Ghana.

There’s certainly no expectation that Nketiah will be involved with England in Qatar this winter. Southgate has plenty of options up front, and he hasn’t given the Arsenal striker a chance to show how he might fit in the team ahead of the actual tournament.

But with the way Nketiah has been progressing over the last year or two, it’s certainly not impossible he’ll end up in the England team eventually.

For now, the 23-year-old isn’t committing his future either way.
