Earlier this week, the Daily Mail made a claim about Gabriel Martinelli’s ‘wage demands’ that seemed a little bit on the excessive side and now a more realistic number has hit the press.

The Daily Mail ran a piece a few days ago that seemed like it was being fed to them by Gabriel Martinelli’s agent as part of negotiations. It claimed that Martinelli wanted £200kpw, almost triple the £70kpw he reportedly earns at the minute.

That would seemingly make him the third highest earner at the club behind Gabriel Jesus and the number 5.

Today (Friday), however, The Times have a much more realistic number – £100kpw.

MARTINELLI JACKPOT! Arsenal must treble his wages to £200,000 to seal new deal Daily Mail11 Oct 2022By SAMI MOKBEL Chief Football Reporter AFP Looking ahead: Arteta ARSENAL will have to make Gabriel Martinelli one of the club’s top earners to tie the young Brazilian down to a new contract. Sportsmail revealed last week that the Gunners had made a new long-term deal for Martinelli a priority as the 21- year- old emerges as one of the best young talents in European football. Talks have begun, but an agreement is not close. There is no panic from either side, with Martinelli — rejected by Manchester United as a teenager — settled in London and keen to stay at the Emirates. But Arsenal will need to make the Brazil international, who is part of the same management stable as Real Madrid’s Vinicius Jnr, one of their best-paid players. As it stands, Gabriel Jesus and Thomas Partey are Arsenal’s top earning stars, both picking up more than £200,000 a week. The club are also in talks with Bukayo Saka, with the 21-year-old England star also set to earn close to the same amount. Martinelli’s wages are currently around £70,000 a week, meaning the Gunners will need to treble his pay to reach a deal. There is no immediate rush for the Londoners because their young forward’s deal is not due to expire until 2024 and the club also hold the option for an extension. However, Arsenal recognise that they need to reward Martinelli for his superb performances this season and want a deal in place sooner rather than later. They are conscious of interest from rival clubs, with Chelsea among the teams understood to be monitoring Martinelli’s performances closely. For now, however, Martinelli is fully focused on the season with Mikel Arteta’s Premier League leaders and breaking into Tite’s squad for next month’s World Cup. Martinelli has three international caps, but competition for attacking places in the Brazil squad is fierce with the likes of Neymar, Vinicius Jnr, Richarlison, Antony and Raphinha vying for slots. However, if he continues in his current form Tite will find him difficult to ignore. Speaking after Sunday’s pulsating 3-2 win over Liverpool, in which Martinelli scored and made another, the South American insisted he wants to remain at the Emirates Stadium. ‘Of course, I want to stay. We are talking. Let’s see what is going to happen, but I want to stay, of course,’ he said. ‘I think it’s my best season here at Arsenal. I’m so happy for this moment.’

Some confusion arises as it is not entirely clear how much Martinelli is currently earning at the minute.

The Mail claim it is £70kpw, The Times claim it is £50kpw and I was operating under the impression it was around £30kpw after his last renewal reportedly tripled the £10kpw wages from his initial contract.

Regardless of what he is currently earning, £100kpw is a hell of a lot of money, especially when you are only at the very start of your career.

Martinelli, who has previously spoken about spending his career at Arsenal and becoming captain of the club, has interest from other teams.

Chelsea have been the team most loudly linked, but it seems as if Martinelli will remain true to his word and has no interest in moving across London.
