Crawley Town confirmed the departure of manager Kevin Betsy and assistant manager Dan Micciche following their last match against Grimsby Town – a 3-0 away defeat.

Up until four months ago, both Betsy and Micciche had been working within the Arsenal youth setup. Betsy was head coach of the u21s, whilst Micciche was in charge of the u18s. But both left to pursue a senior role with Crawley.

At the time, this was viewed as a big loss for Arsenal. Betsy and Micciche had done excellent jobs with their respective teams, and the former also had plenty of positive experiences to draw on from his spells in charge of the England youth teams, u15 to u18.

Yet the appointment at Crawley was somewhat of a disaster. Betsy’s side lost eight of their first 12 league games to sit bottom of the table with just six points.

In the end, it was perhaps unsurprising to see the club hierarchy taking action. Meanwhile, Arsenal have moved on to replace Betsy with Mehmet Ali and Micciche with Jack Wilshere.

Perhaps most disappointingly for Arsenal fans, loanee Mazeed Ogungbo has now been left in limbo at Crawley.

The centre-back is on his first loan in senior football, and he seemed to have a guaranteed place in the early stages under Betsy. The two knew each other well from their time at Arsenal, so it appeared to be a good match.

Yet a red card in mid-September seemed to lose Ogungbo his place in the squad, and he’s yet to return after suspension, even under Crawley’s new management.

All we can do now is wish Betsy and Micciche the best with their next jobs, and hope that Ogungbo proves his worth to get another chance with Crawley.
