Auston Trusty has been a bit of a cult hero for Birmingham City fans this season.

The 24-year-old United States international has shaken off the “marketing signing” tag some Arsenal followers had pinned on him to put in some strong performances for the Championship side in his first couple of months there.

Yet even the most ardent Trusty fan probably didn’t predict what he’d do in the first half against Bristol City on Saturday.

With just three minutes on the clock, Trusty rose highest to head a corner towards the Bristol net. Whilst it initially seemed the ball had been cleared off the line, the referee then confirmed it had crossed for 1-0 and Trusty’s first goal on loan.

Before the half was over, the centre-back had doubled Birmingham’s advantage. He initially headed against the post from a free-kick, but he was alert to tap home his own rebound ahead of the goalkeeper.

You can watch the goals here at 0:06 and 1:45.

Birmingham scored a third goal in the second half, and Trusty helped them to keep a clean sheet at the other end to ensure victory for his side.

It was an important win for the team, who were on a run of three games without one. Trusty will look to keep his good individual form going when Birmingham travel away to Hull City next Sunday.
