Gabriel Martinelli and Bukayo Saka both spoke to the BBC immediately after their goals helped Arsenal defeat one of the sides that usually give them such trouble every season.
Arsenal beat Liverpool on Sunday, if you haven’t heard.
It comes on the back of a win over Tottenham and a media that is starting to wake up to the something special that is happening at Arsenal.
What that will result in by the end of the season is hard to say, but this young team are hungry and focussed in ways we haven’t seen since before the club left Highbury.
Gabriel Martinelli scored the opener, from a Bukayo Saka assist, before one minute was even on the clock. He then returned the favour in the final minute of the half, setting up Saka to restore Arsenal’s lead.
Saka then stepped up to score a second half penalty to seal the points after Liverpool had equalised for a second time.
Jurgen Klopp thinks the penalty was ‘very soft’.
I think this is a side that does not know when it is beaten.
“It means a lot to us,” Martinelli said after the game. “We have been working hard and we deserved the win, and we need to keep going. The season is long and we want to achieve good things.”
Saka added, “The last two or three years Liverpool are a team we’ve struggled against, to win today in front of our fans is special. It shows how much we’re progressing, we just want to continue to put in performances like this.”
Asked if the result gives the team more belief, Saka replied, ” Yeah, it gives us more confidence because they’re a fantastic team, and we have a lot of respect for them, so … yeah.”
So what was the key to the win? “I think the spirit,” Martinelli replied. “We are running for each other. And as I said a lot of times we are a family, and everyone is on their toes and we deserved the win.”
Asked if Arsenal can stay on top of the league Martinelli replied, “We need to believe. We need to go game by game, trying to win them, that has to be our mentality.”
