Arsenal youth striker Khayon Edwards made the bench in the Europa League as Mikel Arteta’s side faced FK Bodo/Glimt in midweek, his first appearance in a senior matchday squad.

Though the youngster didn’t get to make his debut, those close to the 19-year-old inform Daily Cannon that it was a really positive experience.

The player is now said to be “super motivated” to return to the first-team group as soon as possible, hoping there might be further chances in the remainder of the Europa League group stage, starting with PSV Eindhoven on Thursday.

It’s more difficult to make the Premier League squad, due to the lower limits on bench spaces. There are nine spots available in the league, compared to the 12 in UEFA competition.

But with so many Europa League games at the moment, and Arsenal performing well in the group, there could well be further chances in the coming weeks.

Edwards’ first-team call-up was a welcome boost for the teenager, who had started the season in strong form before an injury setback.

With two goals and one assist in three games, and all three goal contributions coming against the Manchester United and Chelsea u21s, Edwards will have been bitterly disappointed to miss the next month or so with a hamstring problem.

But to return to fitness and almost immediately receive a first-team opportunity probably exceeded even Edwards’ expectations. Now he wants to keep impressing so he’s ready the next time he’s called upon.
