Arsene Wenger thinks Arsenal have a good chance at winning the league this season because no team appears to be especially dominant right now.
After the first couple of months of the season, Mikel Arteta’s Arsenal sit at the top of the Premier League table, one point clear of Manchester City and Tottenham Hotspur.
That could all change very quickly, especially with the run of games Arsenal have coming up. The Gunners face Spurs and Liverpool in their next two fixtures, major tests for their title credentials.
Ahead of those two matches, Arsene Wenger has claimed Arsenal have a good chance in the title race this season.
“I would say they have a good chance [of winning the league] this season because I don’t see any super dominating team,” Wenger said. “I believe that it is a good opportunity to do it this season.
“Of course, it’s a little bit of a special season as well because you have the World Cup in the middle and you don’t know how much that will affect the performances of the individual players and of the teams.
“Overall, I believe there is a good opportunity there this season.”
It’s certainly true that all the potential title contenders have had slip-ups already this campaign. Manchester City and Spurs have largely been in good form, but they’ve dropped points to the likes of Aston Villa (15th) and West Ham (18th).
Manchester United have lost to Brentford and Brighton, Chelsea have suffered defeats to Southampton and Leeds United, and Liverpool have dropped points in four of their six matches.
Third-place Spurs have often been underwhelming even in the games they’ve won, though the same can’t be said for City.
Personally, I’d say if Pep Guardiola’s side continue roughly as they’ve started, it will probably be enough to see off the competition in the end.
All the same, this is closer than Arsenal have been to a title challenge in quite a few years. A couple of good results against Spurs and Liverpool would certainly have the fans dreaming.
