Reiss Nelson is set to get chances to compete for a place in Mikel Arteta’s team this season, once he returns from injury, according to a report.

Reiss Nelson was one player linked with a potential exit ahead of the summer transfer window, particularly considering his Arsenal contract expires in 2023.

But the winger remained in North London beyond last week’s deadline, and The Athletic report that he’s been assured he will get the chance to compete for a place at Arsenal once he’s fit again.

Despite the obvious assumption that Nelson’s injury prevented him from leaving in the summer window, reports suggest this was always the plan for this season.

James Benge told the Arseblog podcast that Nelson was planning to stay at Arsenal for the coming months even before his injury.

Though there’s a sense that Arsenal would’ve liked to cash in, Arteta rates Nelson highly, and the player feels there will be chances for him this season.

For the time being, the focus is on Nelson overcoming his injury setback.

The winger is back running again, posting on his Instagram story the week before last that he’d had his “first day on [the] pitch”, a step towards a comeback.

We’re yet to see any signs of the 22-year-old rejoining full first-team training, but it doesn’t seem impossible he plays some part in the coming Europa League group stage matches – at least in October.

If he does well, Premier League opportunities could follow, as Arsenal are really lacking a solid alternative to Bukayo Saka right now.
