Arsenal summer signing Fabio Vieira is yet to feature for the club in any fixture, whether pre-season or competitive, as he works on his recovery from an injury sustained before he signed for the club.

As a result, we don’t know exactly where the midfielder is set to play for Mikel Arteta’s side. He took up a number of positions with FC Porto, from central midfielder to false nine to playing out on the wings, and anywhere in between.

Initially, the consensus among Arsenal fans was that Vieira was an alternative to Martin Odegaard, as another left-footed technical player who can contribute in the final third.

But with Arsenal’s new system this season, there’s an increasing sense that Vieira might fit well in Granit Xhaka’s position.

Arteta hinted in his most recent press conference that Vieira is indeed an option on the left of central midfield.

“Granit has certain characteristics, but we can develop other characteristics because he has the ability to do it,” Arteta began.

“When Fabio Vieira plays in that position he will have a different role because his qualities are different, and it’s the same with Martin.

“So the team has to adapt, but the players as well have to play with an eye on the goal and the feeling that they want to score.”

For the time being, Xhaka is actually doing very well with the extra responsibility going forward. He provided a goal and an assist against Leicester City, taking up some good positions on a number of occasions.

There’s just a sense that perhaps Vieira would add something extra in and around the penalty area, at least in games when Xhaka’s defensive awareness isn’t quite so important.

It will be interesting to see if that’s where the new signing is utilised, but first, he needs to get match fit.
