As we head into Matchweek 4 with with Arsenal set to face Fulham having won their opening three matches of the season, some people are getting a little carried away, like whichever journalist at the pre-game press conference asked Mikel Arteta if Arsenal are title contenders this season.

It’s not unusual to find Arsenal fans getting a little carried away. After all, we all complained we were going to be relegated after our first three games last season, albeit with our tongues lodged firmly in our cheeks.

So, why shouldn’t we have a bit of laugh about going for the title?

It is, of course, far too early to say anything about how this season is going to go.

You can say that Arsenal look better than they have done for years, but with just three games gone, there is simply far too left to go to make an accurate call.

Still, it’s nice to dream.

Journalists, however, are meant to deal with reality so, to see one of them asking Mikel Arteta about his side being title contenders before the first month is out is a little ridiculous.

“We’ve done nothing – we’ve won three games, that’s all” Arteta replied to the stupid question.

“We need to beat Fulham right now and in order to do that we’re going to have to be really good – perform at the level we’ve been performing at or even higher.

“You’re not going to hear it (title contenders) from me. It’s the next game, the next training session. We go day-by-day. But it’s a very different problem from this time last year (when Arsenal lost their first three games without scoring) – I prefer this problem, that’s for sure.

“We need to maintain the cohesion of the team, the belief in the team that everybody is able to contribute. I keep the standards high and keep the demands even higher and make sure everybody is at it every single day.”

Well said, Mikel. Well said.
