Arsenal Misses Forbes’ Most Valuable Football Clubs

Forbes magazine’s rankings for the world’s most valuable football clubs in 2022 have been revealed. Last year, Arsenal ranked eighth, which you can read about in our Barcelona top Forbes’ list article. However, this year’s list marks the first time the club doesn’t appear in the top 10.

Spanish Teams Reign Supreme

The top two most valuable football teams in the world are both Spanish. As mentioned before, Real Madrid takes first place with a value of $5.1 billion, while FC Barcelona comes a very close second with $5.1 billion (its exact figure is slightly less than Real Madrid’s). There’s approximately half a billion dollars worth of value between Real Madrid and the third-placed team, which is Manchester United.

This is the fourth consecutive year that the top spot has been held by a Spanish team. In 2021, Barcelona was the most valuable club, while in both 2019 and 2020, it was Real Madrid.

Arsenal’s Ranking in 2022

From 2007 to 2021, Arsenal ranked among the world’s ten most valuable football clubs. In fact, for five consecutive years (2007 to 2011), it was the third biggest. The 2022 list is the first not to have the club ranked in the top ten. Arsenal does, however, come in eleventh place; the list usually consists of twenty entries.

In 2021, Forbes determined that Arsenal’s worth was $2.8 billion. This was a 23% increase from the 2020 figure. For 2022, however, the club’s worth has been calculated to be $2.05 billion. This is a 27% decrease from the figure reported in 2021.

There are all sorts of factors that can be attributed to the club’s lower-than-expected worth. However, there’s no doubt that Arsenal remains a hugely popular and successful club. $2 billion is not to be scoffed at. The club’s status and history both remain very impressive. Arsenal remains to this day the third most successful club in England, in terms of trophies earned.

The List in Full

Below is Forbes’ list of the top 10 most valuable football clubs in the world as of 2022:

  1. Real Madrid, $5.1 billion
  2. Barcelona, $5.1 billion
  3. Manchester United, $4.6 billion
  4. Liverpool, $4.45 billion
  5. Bayern Munich, $4.275 billion
  6. Manchester City, $4.25 billion
  7. Paris Saint-Germain, $3.2 billion
  8. Chelsea, $3.1 billion
  9. Juventus, $2.45 billion
  10. Tottenham Hotspur, $2.35 billion

As you can see, most teams on the list – five in total – are English. This just goes to show how massive football is in the country and how much passion there is for the sport. Football is without a doubt the nation’s number one sport. People can’t get enough of it. Arsenal might not have made it onto the Forbes list but they’re still sure to win some games this season.

Manchester United is yet again the most valuable club in England. United has often been named as the country’s football with the highest worth. Man U was ranked the biggest club in the world in both 2018 and 2019, though it’s since been overtaken by the Spanish clubs.

Can Arsenal Make the Top 10 Again?

Most of the clubs on the top ten list have experienced a growth in value from last year. For some, the increase has been negligible. The club with the biggest gain is Paris Saint-Germain, whose 2022 value of $3.2 billion is 28% higher than its 2021 estimation. The only top ten clubs to experience a decline in value is Chelsea, with a 3% decrease from 2021 to 2022.

Looking at all twenty clubs, Arsenal is the only other club besides Chelsea to have a decrease in worth. With the club experiencing quite a significant loss of worth, can it join the top ten again?

Given Arsenal’s popularity and its successes in top-tier football, there’s every chance that the club’s fortunes will turn around. Other clubs may be outpacing it right now, but it’s not impossible for Arsenal to reclaim a position in the top ten. It probably won’t ever rank as high as third as it did from 2007 to 2011, but it may well still make the list.

Even if Arsenal comes tenth in 2023, that will still be an incredible feat.
