Martin Odegaard looks set to take over the permanent captaincy position from Alexandre Lacazette, after wearing the armband against Everton.

Though we’re still in the relatively early stages of pre-season, Arsenal’s starting lineup to face Everton this weekend was pretty close to what you’d expect to see on the opening day of the Premier League season against Crystal Palace.

Other than perhaps the full-back and goalkeeper positions, the side was full of likely starters for next season. So the decision to hand Martin Odegaard the captain’s armband was noteworthy.

The likes of Granit Xhaka and Gabriel Magalhaes were among the potential candidates for the position, but both started against Everton and Odegaard got the armband anyway.

The other candidates are probably Aaron Ramsdale, Kieran Tierney, and Hector Bellerin – if he stays.

We’ll see if Odegaard keeps the armband when those three are involved.

Various rumours have suggested Odegaard is set to be given the captaincy on a permanent basis, however, so this is just further evidence of the claims.

You’d think we’ll get an official announcement at some stage, ahead of the new campaign. For now, we’ve got another game coming up on Thursday against Orlando City to give us another hint.
