Arsenal are interested in Gianluca Scamacca of Sassuolo, but there are conflicting reports on how their pursuit of the striker is going.

The Athletic gave us the first concrete links between Arsenal and 23-year-old 16-goal Serie A striker Gianluca Scamacca in May, writing that the centre-forward is of interest to Arsenal.

The outlet added that Inter and AC Milan have been tracking Scamacca closely, and there’s a sense he may decide to stay in Serie A.

Last week, Alfredo Pedulla reported that Arsenal had made their first bid for Scamacca, a €40m offer that had been turned down by the player.

Then Daniele Longo reported for Calciomercato that Scamacca has an agreement with Inter Milan, a deal which is on standby amid their interest in the return of Romelu Lukaku.

Whilst Longo repeated that Arsenal have submitted a bid for Scamacca, the details were different. The Calciomercato report claims Arsenal bid €35m, and that it was Sassuolo (not Scamacca) who turned it down, as they were looking for €40m plus bonuses.

On Monday, Fabrizio Romano brought the latest twist in the story, claiming Inter Milan aren’t working to sign Scamacca at all.

If that’s true, then suddenly the favourite for the signing is out of the race.

So Alfredo Pedulla believes Scamacca has rejected Arsenal to wait for Inter Milan, Daniele Longo believes Sassuolo have rejected Arsenal to try and get more money, and Fabrizio Romano believes Inter Milan aren’t even in the race.

Transfer season is evidently well underway, and we’ll need to wait for further updates to figure out which reports are correct.
