Aaron Ramsdale made a vital save to earn England a point against Italy on Saturday, as well as his second international clean sheet in two games.

After a strong debut campaign with Arsenal where he was voted into the top three for the club’s Player of the Season award, Aaron Ramsdale is trying to break into Gareth Southgate’s England side.

The 24-year-old has been a regular feature of the England squad for the last year, making the bench on 13 occasions and earning his debut against San Marino last November.

But Ramsdale was given a much bigger test this weekend, as he started England’s Nations League clash with Italy.

In a tight game, Italy had one of the best chances to open the scoring as the ball deflected into the path of an attacker just outside the six-yard box, with no defenders covering.

Ramsdale was scrambling across the line, but he managed to get a leg out to block the shot and maintain his clean sheet.

The goalkeeper made a couple of other saves and managed a 70% pass accuracy for the night as the match finished 0-0.

Whether or not Ramsdale keeps his place for the next game against Hungary, he’s certainly giving Southgate something to think about.

Ramsdale has now kept two of England’s last three clean sheets, even though he’s only started two of the last six matches.

If he can start next season in strong form, the goalkeeper will be nailed-on to travel to the World Cup, and he might even have a shot at getting into the team.
