Matteo Guendouzi has admitted Marseille completely messed up their Europa Conference League semi-final first leg on Thursday night.

In a match involving three Arsenal loanees, Reiss Nelson ended up coming out on top as Feyenoord beat Marseille 3-2 on Thursday night.

William Saliba and Matteo Guendouzi were ultimately left disappointed on the night, despite their side fighting back from 2-0 down to level the scores before half-time.

Speaking to the media after the game, Guendouzi admitted Marseille had themselves to blame for the way the match panned out, and they’ve given themselves work to do in the second leg.

“We made too many individual errors, too many technical errors, and we didn’t show a good image of ourselves,” Guendouzi said.

“We showed a very bad image this evening, so we have to resolve that, starting on Sunday (against Lyon), and of course, we have to win the return leg.

“Despite the very bad game we had this evening, we still had opportunities to score, even to come back to 3-3. There was some positive, but there was also a lot of negative this evening.

“Quite simply, we made the task difficult for ourselves tonight. They didn’t necessarily have a very good [game], we just completely messed it up.”

Marseille can reasonably hope to have the upper hand in the second leg, in front of their own fans.

It would be a shock if they failed to make the final, as the second-best team in France this season up against the third-best team from the Netherlands.

Nelson and co. won’t make things easy for them though. It’s a tantalising second leg.
