AS Roma will make another attempt to sign Granit Xhaka in the summer, but the chances of Ainsley Maitland-Niles joining permanently are faint.

Forza Roma report that AS Roma will try again at signing Granit Xhaka this summer, with Jose Mourinho repeatedly asking for the Arsenal midfielder as a transfer addition.

Roma obviously have Ainsley Maitland-Niles on loan at the moment, but they aren’t currently expected to return for a permanent move.

The Italian outlet claims Maitland-Niles has disappointed, and the chances he’ll wear a Roma kit next season have “now reduced to a flicker”.

The 24-year-old has made eight appearances for Roma on his loan spell so far.

His only minutes in their last four games came in the Europa Conference League, and he was withdrawn by Mourinho at half-time.

The Portuguese manager’s time in England showed us repeatedly that it’s all too easy to fall out of his good books, and right now it seems like that’s what’s happened with the Arsenal loanee.

So instead, Mourinho is after Xhaka again, having made multiple attempts to sign the midfielder last year.

You’d imagine Arsenal’s openness to sell will depend on whether they manage to bring in their desired transfer targets for the position this summer.
