All Nigeria Soccer report that former Arsenal midfielder Kelechi Nwakali had agreed terms to join second-division Spanish side Burgos CF in the final hours of the January transfer window, but the deal collapsed when it couldn’t be formalised in time.

Nwakali is in the final months of his SD Huesca contract, which expires this summer, and he plans to move on.

ANS report that several teams in Spain and England, including Championship side Barnsley, were interested in Nwakali. But Huesca would only do business with Burgos CF.

Before AFCON, Daily Cannon had learned that Nwakali was planning to see out his contract, and there had been interest from some La Liga clubs in a free agent move.

That will likely remain the case after his positive recent performances.

Playing for Nigeria at AFCON, Nwakali made three appearances and one start. He drew praise from supporters in his start, particularly for his creativity from dead-ball situations, as he made three chances and one big chance in their 2-0 win.

Unfortunately, Nigeria went on to lose to Tunisia in the first knockout round. Nwakali didn’t feature in that match.

For the next few months, Nwakali will remain with Huesca in the Spanish second division. He’s a starter for the side, playing 21 games already this season.

It will certainly be interesting to see where he ends up after that.
