David Ornstein reports for The Athletic that Ainsley Maitland-Niles is flying to Italy today to complete his loan move to AS Roma.

Maitland-Niles’ medical is done (he held it in England), he has a work permit, and his personal terms and the terms of the loan were all finalised on Wednesday, according to the same report.

Roma are planning to try and sign the midfielder permanently this summer, but they won’t have an option to buy.

Ornstein adds on Twitter that confirmation of the deal is expected soon, with Fabrizio Romano also hinting that an announcement is forthcoming.

Given all the details are sorted, you’d imagine the only thing left to do is sort out some photos and interviews for the announcement. As he’s heading to Italy today, we could get official confirmation this evening.

After plenty of debate over whether Ainsley Maitland-Niles would join AS Roma with an option to buy or an obligation, ESPN’s James Olley was the first to report on Tuesday that it would be neither.

Olley and Sam Dean of The Telegraph confirmed that Maitland-Niles was close to a straight loan for the rest of the season with no purchase clause.

Roma made their initial offer with an option to buy, but Arsenal insisted on removing the option.

Fabrizio Romano claims that Arsenal will receive a €500k loan fee plus €500k in bonuses from Roma, with Maitland-Niles’ full salary to be paid by Roma.
